Starting college often means adjusting to a smaller living space and limited kitchen access. But for those who love cooking (or just want to save on takeout), stocking up on the right kitchen supplies can make a huge difference. Whether you’re preparing quick meals in a dorm or experimenting with new recipes in a full kitchen, these essential tools and appliances can enhance your culinary skills. This guide will help you identify the must-have items for a successful college kitchen.
- Microwave-Safe Containers and MugsIf you have a microwave, then microwave-safe containers are a must! I would opt for BPA-free containers with lids that have venting options, but any microwave-safe container will do. You can prep meals in these, reheat leftovers, or store snacks.
- Cutting Board and Knife
- A cutting board opens up loads of options for prepping meals. Get a decent chef’s knife, and pair it with a cutting board that is compact and easy to carry if you’ll need to bring it elsewhere for cleaning. While plastic may not be ideal, they are certainly the easiest to clean and often are cheaper than other options. If you have a full kitchen and can afford it, my personal preference is for wooden cutting boards.
- MicrowaveThe king of dorm room cooking, if your dorm does not come with one, I would highly recommend getting one if allowed. They can be used for a lot more than just instant noodles! I have one that also combos as an air fryer.
- Minifridge (With Freezer!)
- If the microwave is the king of dorm room cooking, then the minifridge is queen. Store perishables and leftovers!
- Utensils
- You will need something to eat with, so you might as well get some nice silverware. Plastic works too, but silverware is a longer-term investment that is more eco-friendly, so it will be worth it in the long run!
- Can Opener
- I didn’t realize I needed one until it was too late. I was trying to make pasta sauce, and I had to stop what I was doing to run to buy a can opener. If you see yourself eating beans, canned fruits, or other canned goods, definitely pick up a can opener.
- Scissors
- While you can open things with a knife, to be safer and more effective, get a pair of kitchen scissors to help you open pesky bags
- Instant Pot/pressure cooker (If allowed)
- A game changer for a small dorm, if you can have one! Make sure to check your safety regulations for your on-campus living before buying, as many places do restrict these.
For a full kitchen:
If you live in an apartment or in a dorm with a full kitchen, you have a lot more options for cooking! Having access to a full kitchen in college is a game-changer for students who love to cook or want to eat healthier on a budget. With a complete kitchen setup—including a stove, oven, fridge, and ample counter space—students can move beyond microwave meals and prepare a variety of homemade dishes. A full kitchen opens up endless possibilities, from trying new recipes to meal prepping for the week, making it easier to balance the demands of college life with nutritious eating. Plus, it can be a social hub, where roommates or friends can come together, share cooking tips, and bond over homemade meals. Here are a few additional items I would recommend for those lucky enough to have a full kitchen at their accommodations!
- Frying Pan
- If you are new to cooking, I would recommend a non-stick frying pan starting out. Just be sure to get some wooden spatulas in that case so you don’t damage the non-stick layer. If you feel more comfortable cooking, or are willing to have a sharper learning curve, and have a bigger budget, a good stainless steel frying pan will last much longer.
- 4-quart stainless steel pot
- Perfect for pastas, soups and other recipes, this is probably my most used piece of cookware. There isn’t too much that you would cook in here where a non-stick pot would be necessary, which is why I recommend a stainless steel pot. It will last longer, and it will be easier to clean if you ever do burn something in it.
- Baking sheets
- We all love baked goods, and baking sheets can be used for a lot more than just that! Sheet pan meals are some of my favorites for their ease of prep and cleaning!
Stocking up on the right kitchen supplies can make college cooking a lot more enjoyable and efficient. From basic tools to small appliances, these items will help you prepare nutritious meals even in a small space. Remember to check with your dorm’s rules on cooking appliances, and don’t forget to label your items if you’re using a communal kitchen. Happy cooking!
